I picked up a used 990 set and the nut that goes on the U post is gone. What size is it? I work at a Machine shop and we cannot find anything to work the thread pitch is 32. I also cant find a parts diagram, for the 990 set on lionel site.

Lionel does not let anyone repair the Legacy Bases so you won't find parts on the site. As to the nut I don't have that info but an email to Lionel's "Talk to Us" might help. I would normally advise sending it in for free warranty repair but since this was purchased second hand they might not fix it for free. And is it worth the shipping for the nut? Might be worth a call though. If the charging circuit wasn't updated yet you might be able to get that done if you send it in.
I figured out the size its a M6 .75 thread pitch. I just made one. Thanks anyway.
You can make the nut, but you didn't know how to find out what size it was?

They might send you a nut, worth a try. Or try the ACE hardware store for an M6 0.75 pitch. Or just put a banana plug on the end of your wire and plug it in which is what I do anyway. As to second hand, I've assumed it is in their best interests to keep them working so you can buy Legacy Engines. At least, that would be my business model.

It is very hard to find a size by eyesight. M6 x .75 thread pitch is not very common, I didn't even have a thread gauge for it. I found a die in the back of the drawer that confirmed it. Most of the index's here did not list it. Typically a M6 is 1.00 thread pitch.
Fair point, that sounds like a pretty odd pitch. I haven't lost any of the nuts yet, I guess I'll be careful.
