If you have a Joann Fabric store nearby, they have very fine jewelry chain.

Ray, I use scale tie down chains made by A-Line. They are mostly HO, but they sell many "sizes" of scale chain. Sizes as in number of of links per inch. Here are some pics of an M18 Hellcat tank model on a flat. Notice the chains...

Dave - It is a piece I stumbled on.  Made in Italy (Long before the COVID-19 issue). The company is called BRUMM.

It is 1/43 scale. Bought it from Replicarz.

I learned many years ago that if you burn the fuzz off of what we used to call "pipe cleaners" with a match, the remaining woven metal structure makes a pretty good looking cable/chain for tying down loads.

Not a prototypical load, but for us Toy Train lovers I made this load from a M&M container and some balsa wood for cradles:

Start with a derail prone UP flatcar and leftovers from a MARX caboose and now it's an honored member of the ROW crew.

Randy, so easy, get something anything, cover it with tissue paper like Kleenex, mix up some white glue and water, then paint on and let dry. (best to do this gluing on wax paper)  When dry cut off excess on bottom and paint. That's it. Have fun.

Specifically, has anyone tried a scale 1:48 bus (like a Corgi) on a 50' flat car? Menards did a bus but it was pretty small.

Fun fact: Discounting the ones that turn into animals, most Transformers action figures vehicle modes are very close to O gauge. They all fit on flatcars though!

Sounds like it was a lot of trouble to build, but you did a good job and it turned out beautifully.

This is a great topic with a lot of excellent work, so thanks to Hokie 71 for reactivating it.

Ketchup (Chicago hot dog sauce), mustard, and tabasco on flat car.

I tapped into my love of aviation and built these two T56 engine models.  I scratch built the engine stands and the Allison parts box, then weathered an MTH spotlight car given to me by @Mark V. Spadaro.

Made a Boom MOW car for the American crane..

To reply to those who asked about chain:

I use Metal Gallery 1327048 Antique Silver, available at craft stores 6yds/$9.99.  I then put it in a solution to rust the chain.

I think the chain link size of this chain is a good “fit” and looks substantial enough to believably hold the vehicle on the flat.

Nice idea and a great touch with the railings.  With a different color scheme, you could mimic the famous Lucy movie.

I built the TBF Avenger to be included in my Bush 41 Funeral train consist. Thought it was appropriate to have it next to his coffin car. The Long Tom took me back to my childhood. I built that when I was probably  12 yrs. old.  The High Speed Tractor (HST) that was used to pull it in WWII was very difficult to find. This is a solid 3D resin model.  I have since bought a conventional kit, 3D printed.  Looking forward to the cold weather to build it.  Finally, I have a number of WWII loads and modern tanks etc., and Vietnam era helicopter, but nothing representing the Forgotten War, Korea. So I built a "M.A.S..H like" Bell H-13 Sioux.

I don't think they'll be taking off anytime soon!

Securing the Long Tom + HST as an infantry  squad, M20 Armored Utility Car and Sherman Tank provide cover.

Ron, A few questions  on your good work and thanks in advance:

1) Are those decals on the box? I assume you made them using clear decal sheets?

Thank You!   Can't please everyone though.  My biggest critic said, "You know... they wouldn't transport those engines with the propellers attached." 

This has always been my favorite custom flat load.
