So Lionchief sets like the new Albert Hall set will not run with a conventional transformer?? So you can't combine it with an existing setup? If so that totally curbs my interest in these otherwise cool sets.

Yes, you can run them with the power from an existing transformer. Just turn the power up to full, and use the remote to control the locomotive.
LionChief Plus can also be run in conventional control without the remote, by use of the switch on the locomotive.
Like Nicole said, you can run LionChief locomotives on a conventional layout as long as you tun the power up to around 18 volts (and have no other active conventional engines on that same track).
However, you also need to be aware that if you have a number of lighted cars or accessories also receiving that same track power, operating them at 18 volts for a prolonged period may/will shorten the life of those bulbs.
Better, in my opinion, to go with the LionChief+ if you want to do a lot of conventional operating of your trains on what is essentially a conventionally powered layout.
I'm using three postwar zw's to run eight loops. This allows me to blow my horn on six tracks.
Assuming I install the proper quick acting breakers to protect the track; could I eliminate one zw and run four Lionchief plus engines on the accessory outputs of the other two zw's?
Would there be an issue with pulling MPC era Madison passenger cars behind the Lionchief plus engines? If so could I alleviate that problem by installing LED's inside the Madison cars?
