I have TWO Lionel 0-6-0T's- The 06 Granite Run Quarry and the 01 Alaska Railroad. The Alaska, when run at extremely slow speed will stop somewhere in the middle of my FastTrack 036 turnouts, but the 06 Granite Run does NOT.  I do notice there are some isolated third rail sections in these switches, and am wondering if this is related. Still, why doesn't the Granite Run exhibit the same problem? I've done the obvious- cleaned the rails, and the wheels with ISO, etc.  I'm really reluctant to return the Alaska because I already had a warranty replacement for some cosmetic defects in the paint, but if I have to I will.  The Alaska otherwise performs perfectly if I enter those turnouts at a reasonably slow speed, and I've even done lash-ups with the Granite Run Quarry with no problems.

Anyone experience this?

I'm probably breaking all sorts of forum rules, but I'm REPLYING TO MYSELF to report that this time I REALLY think I found the answer to the stopping/stuttering into switches problem of my one Lionel 0-6-0T engine!  It had NOTHING to do with the Legacy Signal, nor the ground, and not even how clean the rails were!  It was more BASIC- IT WAS THE TIRES!!!!!!

I started thinking- what was the difference between my two 0-6-0T's?? Then it dawned on me that I had replaced the tires on the older engine with tires I purchased from "trains-in-the-attic".   When I compared the Lionel OEM tires with the newer replacements, I noticed there was a HUGE difference in THICKNESS!  Once I replaced the OEM tires with the newer THINNER tires, the Alaska Railroad#1  has been going through my FastTrack 036 switches at 1 or 2 steps above idle for at least a half hour, and still counting!   I'm guessing that the thinner tires are allowing better contact with the outside ("common" or "ground" rails) instead of just riding on top of them once inside the turnouts???  Here's how the two tires compare:

I was THIS CLOSE in calling my vendor for a warranty return/replacement!!

Hope this helps!

I simply replaced the original Lionel tire on the problem engine with the thinner tires that I had purchased a while ago from trains-in-the-attic on Ebay. Both engines now have the SAME thinner tires FROM THE SAME STOCK I HAD ON HAND.

No part number lookup was required. AFAIK there are only TWO tire sizes- 3/4" and 1"  Most diesels and smaller steamers (like the 0-6-0T)  take the 3/4" and the 1" is for the larger steamers.
