hi all, i’m good at tech stuff and have a question; I have the lioncheif polar express starter set and looking to add the un coupler track section lionel number 6-12020 I know there is more than one way it can be done but without a transformer involved what would be the most practical?

If you have your train up & running, just fit it in to your layout and use it. It runs on track power... or optionally with an external power source.
And because you're running LionChief, the track is already getting 18v. What you'll need to consider is the wattage of your power supply. Some Operating Cars draw more than others.
