I was thinking of this crane, too...does it move back and forth under power - if so does it have to be on tracks to get its power to roll?

I had an older version that had wiring controls from controller to crane action, does this work that way too or is it all command control?

Paul

This one is Command only. No Controller

They can be right next to each other. Like engines. They just get programmed as different numbers.

I.E. the Gantry and its Sound House can be programmed as ID 2 and the Trackside and its Sound House can be programmed as ID 3.

As an alternate approach, if you don't plan on using the cranes simultaneously, you could get by with one house and change it's programming to toggle it between Gantry and Trackside mode depending on which crane you want to use.

Could get tedious with needing to remove the roof to access the program/run switch each tome to do so though.  If you are going to play with both  a lot, I guess a second house may be a good idea.

Thanks for the video - thousands of words there. It must get its power from the special track section - is that a Gargraves and/or Ross item? Am guessing there's no other way to power it, such that it could roll on layout surface (without track section)?

The wheels are similar to train wheels.  I don't believe it would roll well (if at all) on any other surface(and metal, like a flat surface would be out since the opposite wheels would short together).  There is a traction tire on the drive wheel.  If you used any other method to apply power, you are also now tethering it with the power wires you would need to rig.  Not worth the hassle/risk to try to do anything other than the track it's made for, IMO.

Reminds me, I need to order a track section or 2.  I so far only have been playing around testing it with the crane sitting on a box so the wheels were elevated while I tested them.  I temporarily powered it with alligator clips to the lugs attached to the wheels.

The Gantry Crane track is from Ross, I believe Gargraves also makes a similar item.

This is true. You can buy a ready made gantry crane track. If you already have a layout built and don't want to tear up a section to place this gantry track, you can lay down your own rails on either side of an existing siding. I used plain code 148 for my crane rails. Other have just taken ready made 2 or 3 rail track and cut out the rails on ties and tacked them down.

Pete, that's what I'm doing with my Lionel O gauge tinplate track. I decided to leave the ties full size and line them up with the ties of the the length track the crane will service so they look like one long tie.  I slide a piece of 1/4" x 1/2" pine cut to size painted black under each tie to hide the hollow space anyway so I'll do the same with these and it'll look like the rest. Screw everything down. Slide additional Wardie jay O gauge ties in between the metal ones, ballast and done.

I have a question for the guys with the Crane Sounds House. According to the instructions it is programmed differently for the Gantry and Trackside Cranes to get the appropriate sounds. Initially I programmed it according to the first set of programming instructions I came to in the manual. Well they turn out to be for the Trackside crane. When I realized the Gantry crane instructions were on the next page I reprogrammed it. The only difference in programming them is the last key you press and what happens after you press it. For the Trackside crane you press the number 3 and then you get a metallic clank sound. For the Gantry you press the number 1 and you get no sound.  No matter how many times I reprogrammedit to the Gantry crane I still get the metallic clank. The sounds as far as I can tell are the same as MichRR714 has so I don't think anything is wrong. Charlie, did you get the clank? Are the sounds different for the Trackside crane and if so, what are they?

Thanks in advance guys.

Pete, that's a great idea. How did you attach the 148 rails to the layout? And, where do you buy such rails?

Paul, I found the rail at my local train store. If he did not have it I would have ordered it from a shop that specializes in 2 rail. I would guess a place like P&D hobby would stock rail. I just spiked it down to the plywood base. I had hand laid some of my HO track in the past and even used HO spikes for this project.

Usually you lay down ties and then spike the track to the ties. In my case I started out with bare plywood section. Then stained it tie color brown. Then used piece of gargraves track for a paint mask and sprayed black paint over the track. What was left was a tie pattern. After spiking the track I brushed white glue over the black paint area and sprinkled ballast. I have seen a lot of track in an industrial area where the ballast is flush or covers the top of the ties and that was the look I was going for.

For an existing layout, no doubt just cutting a piece of 2 or 3 rail track along with the ties would be an easier solution.

Charlie,

Last night I reprogrammed the Sounds House and determined that I performed the keystrokes incorrectly. This time everything went as described by the manual. No metallic clank and it appears that now there's is a different sound when the crane rolls along the track. It certainly is a cool accessory.

Ill try to shoot a video once I secure the rails.
