OK I am confused about the 0-8-0 switchers using the BEMC board. I have the Legacy B6 0-6-0 switcher which can crawl around our club layout at speed step 1 for hours without stalling. The B6 in my opinion is probably the best switcher ever produced in 3 rail. So I am guessing it has a RCMC board. Here is my question how can the RCMC fit in a 0-6-0 and not fit in a 0-8-0? I am assuming the 0-6-0 is smaller.

"Exactly.  I don't think it was purely a decision based on real estate, because the PRIOR production run of 0-8-0's had the RCMC board if I'm not mistaken.  That's precisely why folks were so caught off guard by last year's version of 0-8-0's.  The use of the BEMC board turned out to be a very unpopular decision for a locomotive that came with such a premium price tag.

By the way, those Legacy B6's are GREAT locomotives... so great that I bought an extra one and decided I'll redecorate it in Bethlehem Steel livery rather than buy one of last year's handicapped 0-8-0's.

David"

So does this mean the new AC-9's have the same issue? If so I'll stop saving now.

From the Lionel info:

"Lionel #6-84248 Southern Pacific Lines AC-9 #3800

NOTE: Due to the gearing of this locomotive for prototypical speed operation, it will not have the same speed table as other LEGACY® locomotives and will not lash-up with other command-control engines"

The AC-9 has a RCMC - no consisting problems with other LEGACY units. Website is a typo. These are on the water now and should be here in another 4-6 weeks. Our preproduction samples looked amazing. I think you'll be happy you've saved!

Ryan-

I did notice the cab number on the catalog cover was not actually made in this run!  Curious...

Thanks for the info.  My 40-car fruit train is loaded and ready for the AC-9!

Thank you for that information. Understand the difficulty in assembling a catalog, will have to back to saving again!

Just out of curiosity, what would you double head the AC-9 with? They may have been double headed at times but I have yet to come across a picture of an AC-9 double headed. In particular the early coal fired ones.

The model should easily pull over 50 cars by itself.

Anything your heart desires. My concern was how accurate that website description was as the main Legacy improvement we use has been the ability to couple two different locomotives together for same speed operation. Previously only our MTH locos had that ability.

BOBBYD,

David and I were talking about switchers in particular about the Legacy B6 and the last Legacy issue of the USRA 0-8-0 switchers that had a BEMC board. What does this have to do with a AC-9 which is a much bigger engine?

It worried me that the description on the Trainland website meant this locomotive would also be unable to run with other locos. Not sure loco size has anything to do with it. https://www.trainworld.com/man...lines-ac-9-3800-bto/

"Southern Pacific purchased 12 massive AC-9 locomotives from Lima in 1939. Partially streamlined, the locomotives saw service on both freight and passenger trains. Lionel's models represent the locomotives as they appeared in service from 1939 to 1952 when they were converted to burn oil. Available in both the as-delivered "Southern Pacific Lines" and later "Southern Pacific" lettering, the model will also be available in a "what-if" Daylight version inspired by the locomotive's skyline casing and streamlined pilot.
