Just opened my AC9, it is a great engine!  The Lionel team deserves credit for the significant improvement of the smoke unit!  The unit makes voluminous smoke from the stacks and whistle!  It is great that the smoke comes directly out of the whistle, not from a hole in the boiler.  Thank you Dave Olson.

The only knit I will pick with this engine is the treatment of the pilot.  I have a Legacy GS4 that has metal bands inset in the pilot and it looks georgous.   I had hoped this engine would have the same treatment, looks like the prototype had something similar...

I assume none of the 3805 engines have this treatment, or better said, the factory just didn't happen to forget to trim mine with the metal bands.  Has anyone painted their pilot?  Overall, this is a great engine and I am very pleased to have it!

edit:  Looks like the Daylight and 3800 each had cowcatchers with the metal bands (or perhaps painted silver, hard to tell in the pics)...

I watched Scrap Iron Sher's videos of his 3805 and could not tell if his engine had the same cow catcher as the daylight AC9 pictured above.  I think his is solid black, like mine.  So I am betting all the 3805s do not have the metal bands in the cow catcher.  Hopefully someone else with a 3805 can chime in.  To reiterate, overall this is an excellent engine!

TT4T,

Looking at the catalog it appears all three of the AC9s had the stripes on the pilot. I would follow the advice given by TURBGINE and call Lionel tomorrow. You can also look up the parts diagram on the Lionel website and see if the stripes are a seperatley applied piece or a decal on the pilot. As Lionel made the AC9 in the past I would think the part is available if it is a seperate piece. I am sure the Lionel rep will send it to you NC.

Thanks for the responses.  I checked the parts page.  The TMCC version had the diagram posted, but the new engines are not up yet.  The cow catcher is listed for the TMCC version as a separate part with the silver bands.  I am just curious if I happen to get an engine on which they forgot to paint the stripes or if none of the 3805s have the silver bands.  The catalog images are not always 100% accurate.  Maybe someone with a 3805 will let me know if theirs has the silver bands (either inset metal or painted on).  Again, this is not a big deal.  I will contact customer service tomorrow.  They have always been great to me!

Great engine and the smoking whistle is killer!!!

Here are 2 pics of the front end of my AC9.  I guess the "bands are darkened".

Sure looks good to me! I don't understand the problem. Remember, the AC-9 was a freight locomotive, which worked out in the coal country of New Mexico, while the GS-4 was a passenger locomotive and the SP tended to keep passenger locomotives much cleaner.
