Haven’t owned one of these Lionel steamers from this era (1997). Supposedly Command equipped TMCC. I thought that all of these older steamers ran only in conventional mode. Can I run this with my Legacy 990?

Yes you can run it with a Legacy command control 990 set, download the manual, the parts breakdowns and all that info here https://www.lionelsupport.com/...ons-763E-N.Y.C.-J1-E

Yes, it has command. Early Railsounds and a Pullmor motor with no cruise control. Just put it in your Legacy remote as a TMCC engine if you know the engines I.D. . If you don’t know the number.  You can either try Engine 1 or possibly part of the Cab number for an ID. If not just assign it a new number and enter the info. into the remote.

Okay, thanks. So does the locomotive have a Run/Program switch like the later engines?

Is this engine new to you?….has it been previously ran and or serviced?….if no, I’d suggest a complete servicing before attempting to run. This era of locomotives are known for having the grease turn into granite,…..any attempt to fire up your new to you engine could potentially be disastrous,……verify it’s either been run before you got it or it’s been serviced,….if unknown, service it BEFORE you run it,….
