So just out of curiosity I did the following Google search:

Jade Green New York Central E8

Amazing how different these locos look depending on the color film used and the reproduction method used to show them on the web, and goodness knows what other variables.  Dramatic differences, to say the least.  No idea how Lionel decided which green to use, given that the locos,  certainly,  and likely any paint chips are long gone.

Fellas, this not “jade” green, the correct term is Century green, and a Dupont code exists for this color. So there’s no real reason for the big L to screw this up ( I pray for y’all’s sake they didn’t ) …after consulting the Central Overlord, ( Mario ) We both are in agreement Kline got it right,….So if they got anywhere’s near what Kline did, y’all will be ok,…..

Why do you have to drag me into this?

Don’t ask me how I know this Century green is “correct”…

The Lionel Facebook page photo looks pretty close to the K-Line caboose above and some of the photos of the originals on-line.  Clearly a unique color scheme for the NYC, so I'm guessing most purchasers will be fine with it, color-wise.  It would be shocking if there aren't some people who are not .

There always will be that one whiner,  …..but from what I’m seeing, the orange box folks got this new offering pretty close, ….at least it’s not a country mile off like the NYC Pacemaker cars from a few years back, ……those, blind people can see they’re wrong….

Trying to justify an O scale model painted with a satin finish, semi gloss finish, or flat finish, vs. a fairly fresh high gloss real locomotive is gonna drive you guys nuts!…..without getting super crazy with gloss levels, Lionel did a pretty decent job on these engines as far as what I can see, & in my opinion only,….on y’all’s layout, or on display, I’d say these look great,….compared to some other recent offerings of other roads that were clearly a mile off, I’d say NYC fans dodged a bullet altogether on this one……I’d like to hear more from my esteemed colleagues, ……😉

I don't have the audacity to call myself "esteemed", but it's YOUR money, have it however YOU like it. When the PROTOTYPE POLICE start paying for stuff, then they can call the shots.

"When the PROTOTYPE POLICE start paying for stuff, then they can call the shots."

100% agree with you in principle.  However, I don't mind it when folks point out possible variations from prototype in a civil manner.  When threats of violence or examples of unwarranted absolutism/arrogance are part of the post, it's time for that post to be deleted as anti-social,  and, not incidentally, often mildly to wildly inaccurate/unreasonable.  Insisting that one 50-80 year old photo on the web is definitive is an example of the inaccurate/unreasonable.

This thread has mercifully been entirely civil and useful.  Much appreciated.

Ford had an E coat issue in the 80’s & 90’s…..the paint would literally fall off the car ….

There's no question that the paint would literally fall of the car.  On the other hand, there are many, many cars that paint has fallen off of, including apparently well-made foreign models.

I worked for Ford in the timeframe you mentioned and don't recall ever seeing anything about a "great Ford paint debacle".  A couple of smaller debacles, definitely, usually due to surface treatment not being up to snuff prior to entering the paint booth at the plant, and oddly enough apparently related to the specific color applied below the top coat.  The paint didn't fall off of all cars, only ones with certain colors.

Big ones, with large numbers of cars involved, no.  Did I miss something?

Anyhow, back to the E8's.  Although historically they were all long in the tooth before they received the green we see (hopefully correctly) on these new Lionel units, they were easy to spot because of the marked difference between this color and anything else that NYC had used before it.

They caught my attention the first time I saw them here in the Detroit area because of it, and were a joy to keep an eye out for afterward.

Will Lionel get it right here?  Maybe; maybe not.

Obviously the difference between high gloss and flat may not please some folks.  It appears the models are very similar in color to some prototype photos, but flat on the model rather than the high gloss on the restored loco.

But as far as actual color perception, the eyes and brain perceive colors differently on very large objects versus small objects.  Then there are the lighting conditions. Finally, there are striking variations in folks' color perceptions,  even after considering types of color blindness which are common and dramatically alter color perceptions.  So we shouldn't be surprised if one person thinks the color looks great and another thinks it's way off.  As Casey Stengel used to say, you can look it up (in neurobiology and ophthalmology texts).

Yes, you did miss something, ….I worked in engineering for FOMOCO, they had huge E coat problem, thousands of cars & F series & E series  had to be repainted at the dealer level under warranty ……Only dealerships with Ford authorized collision centers did the work. Thank god I didn’t work in body systems, I was strictly drive train….
