Generally speaking, the differences had to do with the number of operating couplers.

6076: Two fixed couplers
6176: One operating coupler, one fixed coupler
6476: Two operating couplers

As the years went on, Lionel was known to use existing inventory to fill outfits, therefore sometimes the above numbers don't always hold true. It's also not uncommon for a car to be stamped with one number but it came in a box for a different number. Lionel always officially identified them by the truck configuration, NOT the number printed on the car.

Your hopper looks molded yellow, not painted. I believe it to be a common 6176-75.
