I have Lionel 6-28656 Pennsylvania 2-8-4 Berkshire Jr #56 and am wondering about the smoke generation feature.  When I add smoke fluid, it produces smoke just fine but the smoke does not puff up into the air.  The smoke barely clears the stack and settles all around the loco as if the smoke is eminating from a witch's cauldron or something.  Is there a little fan that should puff the smoke up and out of the stack?  Maybe it's broken or missing altogether?  Is there a way to fix or add a fan if it's not there?

Thanks

Your Berkshire does not have a fan-driven smoke unit (this is commonly seen on diesels), but rather a piston-type smoke unit. On one of the driving wheels there is a cam, which drives a piston and spring to generate puffs of smoke. My guess is there could be an air leak in the assembly, or something simple like a weak/broken spring or possibly something shifted out of alignment.

Although you can add a fan-driven smoke unit, you would have to modify the mounting brackets and ensure the new unit would line up under the existing smokestack. There's also the obstacle of getting the new unit to puff smoke, and synchronizing the puffs with the drivers.
