The Lionel Northern A.T.S.F. #3751 makes the sounds of rails creaking and popping while running the engine very slow. I do not know if any other locomotives have this sound effect. I think it is a neat sound feature, Lionel does not advertise this sound. I have two videos of the Northern on youtube. Engine is running very slow to make the sounds. Here are the links.

My very early Lionel Legacy Rock Island GP7 also has all sorts of "pinging & creaking" rail sounds when running nice and slow.
I believe Lionel added this to their engines in late 2011. My Vision Line 700E Hudson doesn't have it, but my Legacy Crescent Limited does. I think it adds to the overall realism.
The hudson has the sequence mode .. I really like it but most legacy engines have now.
I noticed it too - nice isn't it?
At first, it took me a while to figure out what the sound was: that it was not something wrong with the loco and it was synthesized.
