Here is the link to the parts breakdown.  On many I've had to repair, it required both the motor and the geared wheelset to properly fix.  On these you need to determine if you have a series 1 or series 2.  If it is series 2 the motor seems out of stock currently.

Part #26 is geared wheelset, #19 or #20 is the motor.

That Is a golden oldie and hard to imagine a stripped gear that would work in reverse and not forward (it is the same set of gears!). Do you have a switch or similar locked in reverse?

I've seen them work in one direction then not the other.  It is usually due to being a slight bit of play, and going in reverse the play is lessened so the contact between the motor gear and the geared wheelset is tighter.  It won't work for a long period of time, then the gear that is wearing will continue.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I have ordered item 26:

DRIVER / REAR W/ GEAR / POLAR EXPRESS /1DRIVER / REAR W/ GEAR /$16.35$16.35

Hopefully it will resolve the problem. We will check the gears on the motor shaft and if they don't seem to mesh properly we will order a new motor.

Is there an easy way to determine if you have a series 1 or series 2 motor without removing it? Does the latest motor say series 2 or have a different PN on the motor?

Thank you again,

Merry Christmas

Joe

Look at the parts breakdown picture in the link above - it shows pictures of both motors.  Easily to tell which one you have with the shell off.
