My Lionel PRR Camelback (6-18091) runs great, has a great whistle but alas, no chuff. What component(s) are responsible for the "chuff"? Could it be the tether in this engine? It does not have an IR link, just a 4 pin tether similar to Proto 1 MTH. Or, could it possibly be the motherboard? Thoughts?

There is a switch that triggers the chuff. Activated by a lever. Assuming with a 4 pin tether it has a puffer style smoke unit. I believe if the piston becomes stuck in the chamber. It causes the lever not to engage the chuff switch.
It could also be the switch, a common issue. If the piston got stuck, it also wouldn't puff smoke, so that's easy to check. I'd say that 5 or of 6 of the switch issues are resolved by bending the tab on the switch a bit to adjust the travel.
Here's what the chuff/cherry switch looks like, it's located between the two front drive wheels inside, could definitely be what Dave said, or the cherry switch went bad, or a wire came off the switch.
