My Lionel rotating pylon w/airplane began to jerk and make noises. If I gave it a push it would work. Upon complete disassembly and inspection, I found a small broken gear. The replacement part is not available from Lionel Service. I measured the gear and found a replacement online at a RC car part distributor. It was a bag of twenty, and the price was cheap enough I figured if they did not work I was not out much money, plus I would have spares if I ruined any. The new gear did need to be trimmed in height slightly (I knew this when I bought them). I used a hobby razor saw and miter box. Then, the diameter of the hole  on the gear was slightly too small, even though when I measured the shaft it was 2 mm. I found a size drill bit that would not go into the hole, and used it in a cordless drill to ream out the hole a bit. I used a channel lock pliers to pull the gear onto the shaft, over the knurled area where the gear should fit. It was a tight fit, but it worked. After some lube, it works great! I feel it is actually quieter and runs smoother than when it was new.
