Lionel got these right from the very first offering in TMCC, 4 chuffs and a round boiler.
I have one of the TMCC versions from 2005, its a fantastic switching locomotive with great slow speed operation .
I'm sure the legacy versions are even better.
I have an Erie Legacy version. It is one of my favorite locos. If you look hard enough, you can find some good deals on these. Detail is well beyond its price point. And like RickO says, it has a round boiler and you can see through the space between it and the drivers. Go for it!
I have the Legacy L&N 0-8-0.
What a great value!! Might be the best Loco/$ that I have ever owned.
I have one of the 0-8-0 wth Legacy. Great locomotive, Ihave really enjoyed it. It is my only switcher. The prototype I wanted to model had the head light above the boiler, the cataloge picture showed the head light above the boiler as did the instruction manual, however when it was delivered the headlight was centered in the middle of the boiler.
I purchased this engine at a blowout price so I am still happy.

Yes - great loco. I have one from the first offering, Southern Railway. Why this 4-chuff
issue has been a problem, I do not know. These have 4 chuffs/rev, yet Lionel continued
to produce other, even more expensive locos with 2/rev.
The low-end, almost-scale loco has done these truly nice ones no good, I'm sure. There
is no contest between them visually once you put them side-by-side - the cheapie
looks, well, cheap, by comparison, even with the "full" valve gear. Good project
fodder, though.

TP Fan - I do not know which road name you have, but some of the USRA 0-8-0's
did indeed have center-mounted headlights. The C&O and N&W tended toward that
arrangement, so it is not incorrect if the road name is appropriate. The instruction
manual representation does not attempt to show all the variations in a loco, just
the pertinent ones.
I have the L&N version as my yard goat. Like it a lot.
I have a recent one. I really great loco. Good sound, lots of detail, smooth runner and a good puller.

I have been tempted to get the older Lionel N&W version, but the tender just isn't correct. I'm still waiting for a "right" S1a. For now I have a MTH Premier PS2 0-8-0; which is really wrong.

How much $ are the Legacy versions, and what are the available road names?
I might be interested in one.
I am interested in buying the L&N, although I am good with other road names. What road names have the center mounted headlight? Also, do these have the opening boiler fronts?
