My Lionel #6-84509 S2 NYC Electric locomotive makes a noticeable grinding noise on straight track and the sound gets louder on curved sections of track. Has anyone here on the forum had a similar experience? I would appreciate any replies. Thanks

Hello RickO, All external gears are well lined. Could you be more specific on how to shim the drive axles to reduce play, Thanks
I looked for a past thread to use as reference but couldn't find one. There have been several.
Turn the locomotive over and observe the side to side play of the geared axles.
Sometimes excessive side play causes the gears to only mesh at half or less contact.
Trimming a bread clip down and making it round so it's not visible behind the wheel. You can insert it on the axle between the wheel and the truck frame on the opposite (no geared)side of the truck .
This will slide the axle over improving the gear mesh.
This could be why it's worse on turns, because the curves push the axle to one side.
Hello MELGAR, Direction around curves doesn’t make any difference although one may be slightly quieter than the other.
You’ll need to pull off the shell. A wire most likely has come loose and may be hitting the tack sensor flywheel. It’s happened to me.
Hard for me to tell from the video exactly where the noise is emigrating from.....all good advice given above....to add, look at the simulated outside 3rd rail pick up....these can come loose and come into contact with a spinning wheel, and produce a weird sound.....just one more thing to put on your check list ...😉
