I'm posting this as a new topic so the most people see it as it seems to be a point on much discussion (including by me).

I asked on Lionel's facebook page:

"How is the non-Thomas Lionchief remote mated to the engine it comes with?  Do you set a frequency on the engine and remote or is the remote permanently married to the engine it came with?  If it is permanently married then how many engine/remote combos are there and how do you avoid conflicts if you want to run several sets together?"

Lionel Responded

"Each remote set has a frequency which corresponds to its locomotive. You could run all 14 of the remote sets together on the same platform without any interference. You will also not have any conflict between these sets and our TMCC and LEGACY remotes. The only conflict would be if you tried to run two of the same set together. You don't have to set anything on your own, this is all programmed at the factory."

Lionel's response

"I miss counted, there are 13 sets, and the three new Thomas locos are also available for individual sale"

So, if you drop your remote and it breaks, the train is useless until you get the remote repaired or a replacement.   You can't just keep 1 spare that could be used for any set like you can with a Legacy or DCS remote.  Very poor design.

I wonder what frequency band Lionel is using and how many frequencies they have.  I can just imagine the person flying an RC plane down the street suddenly taking control of your train or the guitarist in the band practicing next door hits a note using his wireless guitar transmitter and your train blows the horn.
