There was a "modern" version some time back with a can motor.  From the looks of the new command version, it's just that model with the command stuff added.

 

I'll be curious to see how they handled the command tie ejection, I converted one to command and that was a bit of mechanical work to get the tie ejection working with command control, I ended up using a model airplane servo.

 

Well I got my new edition of Lionel's Inside Track yesterday and on the last page is a Spotlight: #55 Tie-Jector.

 

Here is some facts on the 2014 command control electronics features an LED headlight, a rear Electro-Coupler and runs in both forward and reverse.

 

In the command control the motorized tie jector mechanism letting you deliver ties anywhere on your layout with the push of a button on your Cab-1, Cab-1L or Cab-2.

You also get the same anywhere, anytime action even in conventional mode! By using the transformer's whistle switch.

 

The mechanics have changed and they are using the micro-gear motor for the tender's coal load on the new Big Boy. Which fit perfectly after designing a mounting frame and a added a miter-gear that translated the rotary action of the motor into a smooth up and down.

 

There is also a new lift arm and new tabs to the redesigned tie jector and storage area of the ties for better performance.

You want to pay the price of command just to get forward-reverse operation?  Thats a stiff premium if you only run conventional (as do I).  I have the PRR version from that era also, Shep.  I bought it because it was the first time it was re-released in 30+ years.  Its ok & I use it with the track trips that attach to my tubular track.  I agree that the tie capacity is poor, just 6 or 8.  Have no interest in a command version...  too much money for an operating unit, in my opinion.

I use fastrack so the track clips do not work for me.  I like the idea of the whistle controlling the ejector mechanism.  Some day I will ultimatly go command then the factory installed tmcc will be nice. It would be right at home with my Trackmobile.

The lionel web site gives the list price at $199 so you will possibly be able to get one for $150 or so. The remake was about half of that back in 97. Jon

If you only run conventional, a $15 reverse unit will easily fit into the front cavity of your unit and give you that capability.

The whistle control button for turning on the mechanism would be nice, though.   I wonder if the track trips can be rigged to Fasttrack.  I will have to get my unit out and take a look.  I think the late 90's Tie-Jector  was like $60.  I will check Lionel.com. 

Activating the tie dropping mechanism was the tricky part when I did my conversion.  Here's the thread, you can see what it takes to get that one to automatically drop the ties on command.  It could be done with a whistle sensing circuit for conventional, but you'd still need the PWM frequency generation and the servo to actually move the mechanism.

 

Command Controlled Tie-Jector

I thought about upgrading my current Pennsylvannia model but the new one address all my concerns plus it is avalable in Amtrak.  I currently run Amtrak and Conrail.  I see it avalable as a pre order for $150 which is not to bad.  I wonder what I might be able to get for my bairly run existing one.  I bought it two years ago new from my LHS.  Thank You.
