I have a canadian pacific lion master sd90 tmcc from about 2006,i want to take the body off so that i can do the smoke unit upgrade that Mike R. shows on the lionel video,i have removed all the screws except for the ones by the rear trucks,i can't get to them,is there a way i can easily remove the trucks. The owners manual doesn't even show where the screws are to remove the body. Any help would be appreciated.

Judging by the exploded parts list for the 6-28211 CP LionMaster SD90, the trucks will not twist off.

To tell the difference between LionDrive and non-LionDrive equipped diesels, the easiest thing to do is look for a worm gear on the end of the motor armature. If one is present, then the unit does not have LionDrive. If the armature has a pressed piece that looks like the letter "X", then the unit has LionDrive and the trucks twist off.

This is the exploded parts view for your CP LionMaster SD90; the motors are part #s 13 and 14 on the diagram.

Here is a close-up of one of the motors. Note the worm gear at the bottom of the motor - this design will not twist off the trucks.

The picture below is of a LionDrive-equipped Motor. Note how the worm was replaced with a pressed on plastic piece (shown on the right hand end of the motor). This design will allow the truck to twist off.

Getting back to your unit, to upgrade the smoke unit simply remove the eight screws that hold the shell to the frame (see parts 36 and 37 in the exploded parts picture above). You shouldn't have to remove the trucks at all.

Hope this helps!

Gerald-

Those screws are definitely hard to get to! If the truck doesn't swivel enough to provide access, you will have to remove the rear truck. There should be a recessed screw near the pickup roller closest to the screwdriver in the third picture. Remove this screw and the entire truck should come off nicely.

Exploded parts diagrams are available on Lionel's website for replacement parts. Enter the product ID for the item you are looking for, and in most cases an exploded parts view comes up.

Good luck!

John, there is a recessed screw near the pickup roller, however it does not release the trucks, but after looking at the trucks & turning them back & forth i noticed there were 2 small screws holding the side bars on & when i loosened them, the side bar comes off & then when i rotate the truck i can reach the screws ok,i couldn't do any more right now because i am having pain in my lower back,so until i am back to normal & i can sit for awhile without any pain i will have to wait a few days to Finish the project, many thanks to you John & all who responded.
