Military Trains - US Navy Locomotives and Rolling Stock

One of my railfan friends sent me these pics.  A friend of his took the photos.These photos were taken in April of 1992 over the fence at the Concord Naval Weapons Station with a telephoto lens. The photographer took them on the side of the road from the bed of his truck.  Probably would've been arrested for espionage or something he he'd been caught at the time.  It's interesting to see some military freight cars in their military livery.  A railfan also just sent me this photo of a US Navy locomotive near Port Chicago, circa 1975.  Matt

The USN cars at Concord were used to move material around the station, which was quite large, and did not go out on the real railroads.  The government owned cars that moved material over the railroads to Concord were DODX cars. Unlike the Navy cars, the DODX cars had reporting marks that were compatible with the AARs UMLER computer tracking system. I think it was a DODX car that exploded at Roseville many yeaas ago.  Most munitions now move in railroad owned boxcars which are much more modern then the government owned cars.
