Modeling a freelance 30 scale foot woodside gondola in O scale.
This is a very basic scratchbuilt high side gondola that represents a railcar having a K style Westinghouse brake system which was common on railcars built through 1933. Parts for this car were taken from a Williams O scale boxcar. Overall dimension of the model gondola is 34 scale feet. The model was made using Basswood sheet and strip. Lionel Bettendorf style sprung trucks were used. More details to be added to the car. Two identical model cars were built.
The model is intended for non-interchange operation and used with a steam era 0-6-0 switcher.
AAR Notes:
1933: AAR required all new built freight cars to be equipped with AB brakes.
1953: K brake ban for interchange cars.
Photos of similar narrow gauge wood side gondolas that used truss rods and turnbuckles are shown for comparison.
