Does anybody know if the MTH AEM-7 will negotiate 0-31 curves and switches? I know the Atlas one will with some truck modifications that are not visible when operating the engine (I've done it)...but there's NO command control. Another engine I would love to have is the electric P-5a but also 0-42.

Minimum curve for the MTH AEM7 is 0-36 which I operate it on using Lionel Super O Track. The Pennsylvania P5A and P5AM also can operate on the same track but the set of the 2 axles that are driven by one of the motors slips when going around curves while the single axle that is driven by other motor does not slip while going around curves.
It will actually operate on Gargraves O32 curves.
I looked at mine and there's nothing apparent that would keep it from running on O31 curves. It's a pretty short engine and it went around an O36 curve and seemed to have truck travel to spare. The P-5a, OTOH, doesn't look like it will handle O31 curves.
My Manual says 042 minimum. I have had derailments on 0-31 curve, especially Lionel 022 switches. http://mthtrains.com/sites/def...ction/20dl16587i.pdf
All bets are off on switches, maybe it's hitting the switch machine.
The limiting factor on turning radius is the skirting on the body interfering with the swing of the trucks.
