MTH announces Railking Scale 0-6-0 switchers, plus our special runs

If u want a nice steam engine, with all the chuffing, and smoke and whistle and stuff, that will be appropriate on a large or small layout, and cost less than an average mortgage payment.....  this is pretty nice.     I really like smaller engines, both diesel and steam.  I grew up around branchlines and shortlines...was never into the heavy metal.....

So here's the MTH offerings....C&O, US Army, UP, C&NW, Reading, and ACL

Our special runs.....Raritan River  (#21 and 22),  Central Vermont (#387 and 389),  and Rutland (#'s TBD).  There is a chance that we might do the rutland as an 0-8-0 .  If that happens , I'll let everyone know and decide if the 0-8-0 is OK.   If u love 0-6-0's and HATE 0-8-0's, u can say so in remarks when pre-ordering.  Rutland also had 4-6-0's, but i always found 10 wheelers to be a little strange...

I would love to do roads in consolidations, but the railking consolidation is a piece of junk (a toy) , and IDK if MTH still has the tooling for the Premier H-9 consolidation.  It was one of the nicest steam engines the MTH ever made, IMHO, so i wouldnt be surprised if Lionel bought it.

I will buy an MTH Rutland 0-6-0 or 0-8-0 steam engine. Just let us know what they decide to build. MTH made Premier and Railking versions of its USRA 0-8-0. I would prefer a Premier 0-8-0 but a Railking version is fine.

Just for reference, here are photos of my MTH Premier 0-8-0 (New Haven #3400) and Railking 0-8-0 (New York Central #415).

Hi Beth!  While we're mincing 0-6-0s and 0-8-0s, just going to throw this out there as food for thought...

I LOVE the cherubic proportions of CNJ 113, which was recently restored to operation in Pennsylvania.  Its wheel arrangement is 0-6-0, but it's a chunky heavy-duty switcher; the overall size and shape of the boiler is closer to that of an 0-8-0.

I don't own a MTH 0-8-0 so I can't check whether the larger boiler could be mounted on an 0-6-0 chassis.  If so, that would create some exciting new possibilities!

There may not be a perfect solution. But if you wanted to do a custom job that captures the spirit of 113 with existing tooling, IMO you would be better off doing it as an 0-8-0.  Adding a few key detail parts-- especially ladders, a rectangular number plate on the smokebox, and the existing high headlight would make for a convincing model, at least from head-on and front quarter views (where you can't count the number of axles.)

I agree that the RK 2-8-0 is an ugly duckling.  The Premier H-9 2-8-0 was a handsome beast and great runner.  Even without the Wooten firebox, it would be a good stand-in for a Reading I10sa.  The long 6-axle tender MTH paired with it (and a lack of funds at the time) caused me to miss out on the first run.  Thanks for listening!
