I finally took mine out of the box and it wont work! no lights, sounds or anything.  I have power on the track, made sure everything was connected properly, tried letting it sit on the track for 10 mins (to charge the onboard ps3 battery).  Cant figure out whats going on with it.  I have a small layout with a z500 transformer and dcs digital commander remote...both of which should be sufficient to power the engine and tender.  Appreciate any help you can provide

dcs digital commander remote

The DCS Remote Commander will only operate a PS2 or PS3 engine that has its factory settings.

It's possible that your Big Boy has been (test) run under DCS. If so, and it was not factory reset via a DCS Remote or a DCS Commander (not possible with your DCS Remote Commander or with a transformer), it won't do anything with your DCS Remote Commander.

You need to get someone with a full DCS Remote and TIU, or DCS Commander, to perform a Factory Reset.

Regardless, it should operate conventionally using a plain old transformer.

I too found that deburring the holes in the side rods stopped the screws from backing out, but I also agree with the Locktite fix.

Haven't done that to mine yet but I will the next time I have to mess with the rods.

pbuff:

Does the engine click when you power the track?

Does the local dealer have DCS on his layout?

Perhaps he can reset the engine for you.

Hope you get it running for Christmas !

I was drooling a bit over the PS-3 one, but can't justify when I have a PS-2 Imperial Big Boy already.

Hi Russell, Thanks for the advice.  I finally got the DCS remote and hooked it up; did an engine reset and now it works like a charm around the tree. Absolutely love it!  Starting to plan my layout for a 12 x 16 room and can't wait to get it running in a 'real' layout.  Just getting back into the hobby after a long absence.

Gee, Spence, its a great looking engine but there's something screwy about the smoke units; the front one looks like it is in backwards or crooked as the smoke appears to be blowing forward while the rear one blows toward the back, as it should if the engine is moving forward.
