I own several PS3 steamers I bought new. Very happy with them all. I'm now looking at the used market to up my roster and noticed there are a lot of PS2 steamers available. Other than the draw bar arrangement, what is the difference between PS2 and PS3? Are the features and sound basically the same? I run DCS if that helps. Thanks.

The biggest difference is there arent any of these in PS3
Make sure you buy PS2 engines that were made after 2004 as the early ones had questionable electronics If you buy the early ones pay accordingly as you might have to add a 200 dollar fix after you run it
I just bought a LIRR RS-3 from 2005 ( 30-2606-1). Should I replace the battery with a BRC-2 unit similar to the BRC-1 for PS-1 engines? This is my first PS-2 engine. Are the post 2005 models more reliable? IIRC I've seen many post about board replacements on MTH locos.

Run PS 2 locomotives with a Nimh 9V Rechargeable Battery or a BCR. PS 3 has a built-in BCR, so no battery.

You really dont need a BCR-2 Just make sure your battery is charged before trying to move your loco. The 3 volt boards that came out after 2004 are very reliable. If you arent sure if your battery is charged just leave it powered up on the track for a little while If your sounds are low or it does some funny things leave it longer or buy an MTh battery charger There is a little port on the bottom of the engine to charge the battery
