I purchased a MTH RAILKING 30-4177-1E  RS-3 that was originally in a “Pittsburgh Steelers” set. It is PS2/3V and it runs well, even with 650+ miles on the odometer after a thorough wheel cleaning.

The issue I have is the sound program the engine uses. The “freight talk” is all audio of an announcer calling plays. That isn’t so bad, but the kicker is the train horn/whistle uses a sound bite of a referee’s whistle.

I am currently stripping the Steelers paint job off the shell as I am going to repaint it for Lackawanna.

Is it possible to change the sound program to a regular air horn sound?

Thanks.

Tom

As a Steeler fan you're killing me here!

Sorry! I knew it would not go over well with western Pennsylvanians…It was cheap and just what needed. The paint died a honorable death. One night in isopropyl and it is stripped clean.

Pete, thanks for the response. I just have to find the cables that are needed. The Erie Lackawanna RS3 will be perfect. I don’t think MTH ever did a Lackawanna engine, but then again, I have never seen everything they ever produced…

No, you're not missing anything, it just wasn't clear what cables you were referring to.

You just need to connect the TIU to your PC using either a serial cable or either the serial or USB cable for a Rev. L TIU.  That is all that is required to load sound and chain files.

If you are updating the software in the TIU and/or the remote, you need a couple more cables.

  • A 3.5mm 3-conductor stereo cable.
  • A 4-conductor telephone curly handset cable with RJ9 connectors.

Yes. The ADPCM program is what you need to change just the horn (unless of course you want to use a file with non sports announcements). Here's my video and I included all the links there for more info.
