MTH Westinghouse cars - real vs not real

Here's a search from MTH using Westinghouse for the road name. If you fiddle around with their advanced search a little, you might find more?

As far as I know Lionel can't be searched like this. For me it is more difficult to find a Lionel item. Most luck I have there is when I already have the product number.

Your Forum name suggests that you may have worked at Cheswick, is that right?

 

I’m 99% sure that we never had any of the MTH SD-24 diesels shown in the attached photo.

 

Re freight cars, I believe that Forum Member “Pro Hobby” has built models and posted photos of non-Schnabel (W) flat cars.  If he doesn’t respond to this thread try searching the archives for his postings.

 

Also, attached is a file which is a scan of info from the Official Railway Equipment Register of July 1959 which lists and describes Westinghouse-owned freight cars as of that date.  So it is a snapshot in time and definitely not a complete all-time list.  They list 8 different cars owned by (W) which are all flat cars.  The last one listed appears to be the first (W) Schnabel car, number 200, which was used by Sharon and Muncie for delivering large transformers and was sold with that division to ABB in 1989.  I guess we didn't have any cabooses yet back then.

That's one of the ICBM launcher cars. Don't recall if it ever went beyond the prototype stage, though.

I found some great photos of actual cars, I'll try to post pics later but I found them on a train photo archive site. Looks like most of the MTH cars were not actual real used trains. Either way I still love them! Found on rrpicturearchives.net searching under Westinghouse electric company.

Some interesting images there, thanks for posting. By the way, both MTH and K-Line have made the caboose. I have the Schnabel and the boxcar; I was looking for the MTH caboose to go with them and happened to stumble across a K-Line at a good price so I bought it. I didn't even know K-Line made a Westinghouse caboose and there it was. I'll post a photo if I get time to dig the car out and photograph it. 

     Westinghouse EMDdemoguy my father worked at the East Pittsburg plant as A hook on and winding coils for the generators. He told me that the Schnabel car that they would load the generators on to that the generators were round. From what I understand the one MTH made is real with the rectangle transformer was made somewhere other than East Pittsburg. Me and my father used to belong to the George Westinghouse model train club in the Westinghouse castle in Wilmerding PA. The club members put together A Westinghouse train. It was A boxcar, coal car and caboose that was pulled by A little steam engine switcher. The cars are still for sale but the steam engines from lionel need to be re lettered and numbered. I think they have 12 or 14 steam engines left but the cars I think they have 45 or 50 sets left. Choo Choo Kenny

That’s a shame.  Forum member DOC and the guys built a nice layout and they also had some beautiful custom Westinghouse cars and locomotives!  I visited it once.  I believe there have been photos of it posted on here before.

Thanks for posting.  So it was the Marine Division based out of Sunnyvale, CA that developed it for the DOD.  That car and its load were impressive.  Too bad the program was cancelled.  We could use it today!

The answer is I did not. I'm an enthusiast for the Westinghouse road name and Emd demo engines with a few other niche units such as the gevo hybrid.  By trade I run an auto collision repair shop here in Phoenix, AZ. I'm 39 so  pretty much I'm stuck in my trade but it does allow me access to anything I need to customize some of my trains!

any of you guys know of historical pictures of turtle creek branch railroad and any workings of the area around Trafford.  I wondered if there were pics of anything when Westinghouse had the workings around the Trafford bridge where 130 goes across to route 993.   I heard that route 993 was also part of the mainline of PRR back in the day and then was moved for whatever reason.    I used to live in Monroeville, and I still work around the area frequently.    thanks Chris

OK, thanks for straightening me out.  The Westinghouse Electro Mechanical Division was based in  the Pittsburgh suburb of Cheswick, PA. It was known as "EMD" to the rest of us in Westinghouse.  Living in Arizona I figured you were a retiree from that Division.   I guess the other EMD is more widely known, especially here on a train forum.

     WftTrains Yes that is the box car from the club set. I can still get the cars from the castle if anyone wants any but the steam engine some need repainted and new lettering. The Westinghouse train you saw running at the castle was mine and my fathers. We have some custom made Westinghouse cars from one of the PGH. High Railers. Another OGR member wants some pictures so I was digging out the Westinghouse train today. I had to move almost 150 cars to get to the Westinghouse cars and I still cant find everything. I am going to take pictures in the morning and try to get them put into the computer. I have never done this before but you guys are asking for pictures so I have got to learn some time. For you(or anyone else looking for historical photos from the general Pittsburgh area) a great resource can be found by searching the website; digital.library.pitt.edu on the internet.  There are thousands of photos and collections of photos that have been donated and scanned into this digital archive.  The photos in general range from about 1870-1990.  Once on the website photo search page,  just type in a word or phrase such as Turtle Creek,  Westinghouse,  Pittsburgh & Lake Erie,  etc.

     Bill The first picture is the club set that is still available. The 2-7 pictures are the custom painted ones from Doc A PGH. High Railer The seventh picture has my father's and my Westinghouse train behind it on the other line. From what I have learned I think all the custom painted Westinghouse cars and engines that Doc owned were sold at the show in Cranberry. Who knows Doc is always painting up and selling crazy stuff. I got some Union RR gondolas with scrap loads in them from him at the Cranberry show last fall. Choo Choo Kenny
