I need to know if there is supposed to be a gasket for the smoke bowl assembly the front half where the heating element goes?

reason I ask as I have checked to make sure the rubber gasket is in correct between the front heating element bowl and the fan assembly and I still get smoke more below the engine frame than what comes out the stack.

I do get the puffs of smoke out the stack so am thinking fan rotation not the problem? I didn't notice a gasket when I disassembled the front bowl of smoke unit lying in engine cradle at the time of reassembly.

I looked on Lionels parts site and only found smoke unit as an assembly and heating element no other parts shown on parts schematic.

can someone that has the nickel plate berkshire 765 item# 6-11212 take a look see and let me know I would surely appreciate any help on this.

if a gasket needed can do as I have done on a few warped mth units and use auto gasket silicone for gas and oil works like a champ.

No other gasket needed, double check the rubber one between the fan housing and the bowl, sometimes it can catch on the shell during reassembly and get pushed out.

It should be inserted with the notch facing upward like a "U".

Shine a light down the stack of the locomotive and see if the smoke unit outlet is properly lined up with the stack casting of the shell.

This is a common problem with these berks, for some reason they are tricky to line up when reassembling and the shell will still go on even if they are not aligned.

Some of these locos were even delivered brand new with misaligned smoke units.

I had better luck aligning mine by lowering the front of the shell down onto the chassis first, then the cab, while concentrating on the smoke outlet alignment.
