I just received my Big Boy but it is a Christmas Gift from the wife and son. Cannot open box until Christmas. I was wondering if anybody received theirs yet and tried it out. I was curious about their observations? Thoughts? Reviews?
A friend of mine bought one and just received it, brief comments;
You ARE going to like it, and it will be a great Christmas
I would suggest download the Users Manual (Not one in the box, even had difficulty finding on the website. Ended up calling sales and apparently they didn't make a link to the "sets" on the basic engine id numbers. Sales suggested I use 20-3575 as the id.)
Interesting to note the "manual" says its compatible with O31 curves, on the cover. The product features on the website says the single engines, 20-3575,76,77 say the engine is compatible on O54 curves, the set product features says it is 072. INTERESTING, especially since all the product feature pages identified above, indicate the engines are ALL 35" long.
My friend was informed by a local hobby shop he needed to have DCS Ver 5.0 for the BB to operate correctly. I was surprised with that! I thought 5.0 was for WIFI and a Super TIU issue. The only info I have found in the documentation is a minimum of Ver 4.2, I asked MTH sales when I was talking to them, and they did not "think" 5.0 was required. But still not sure.
Mine is shipping out today. Should get it by next Monday. DCS 5.0 is primarily for WiFi but adds some features and corrects some bugs from 4.2/4.3. According to my dealer, it's a really nice locomotive. I bought 4014 "as restored" since it was local to me and will eventually be back on the road.
