new train smell?

You have to let all of the oil burn out of the smoke unit first before you add the other scented fluid. I did the same and it didn't smell so great. 

The stuff in the factory that they put in the engines smell bad, the MTH stuff smells like an engine caught on fire. I run eliminator through the smoke units all the time I get a new engine and eventually the scented stuff takes over from there.

You should get Mega Steam Eliminator fluid and use it on new locomotives before adding the scented smoke.

Eliminator enables you to neutralize the factory smoke scent.  Just add Eliminator to your new engines, allow it to completely burn off then repeat the process two more times.  Once finished, you can add the scented fluid.  You won't believe the difference!

ok eliminator ordered. i sure hope it helps because right now that train is stinking up the house, and lingering for a long time. I'll be running it with the smoke off for now. thanks for the help everyone.

Well I have run the eliminator through the train now for 4 full cycles. I let 3 of them soak for a half hour like the instructions say, and one soak over night. I'm still getting that very obnoxious smokey burning smell. It only smells when the smoke is turned on. I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong? The train puts out a nice amount of smoke, so the smoke unit is working. I'm thinking about opening it up, or sending it back since its new. When I originally put in the scented fluid, I only put in several drops, so I don't think that I over filled it. But if it was over filled, would it give off a burning smell? Also, does mega steam smoke fluid or eliminator void a warranty? Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Using Elimiator as suggested above will work. It takes a little while to burn off the stinky crap they put in the factory. I kind of wish they didn't put anything in the smoke units when there new. Sometimes I'll pull out the wick,clean the smoke unit and put in new wicking. 

Since all of the manufacturers have their trains produced overseas, the factories over there use whatever they have on hand to "prime" the smoke units. It is usually something "foreign."  Some have even used plain water thinking that the customers here would not notice...they did!  The whole batch was recalled a couple of years ago.

 We share your frustration with the nasty, awful smell that comes with a new engine. My boss hates it and she always knows when a new engine has arrived, which is not best. That is why we spent a couple of years developing our "Eliminator" and testing it to make sure it would help solve the problem.  It usually takes about 5 filling cycles to get the smoke to smell like "sprite" with a lemony-lime smell. Then you know it is working.  It takes time to cleanse the smoke unit and wicking material so be patient. It usually works. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to replace the wicking material as has been mentioned in this thread.  "Eliminator" was also developed so that when you put in your favorite scent, you get back your favorite scent from the train...that is the whole idea. Thanks for purchasing our product and for purchasing the "Eliminator" which should solve your issues. We also suggest that using "Eliminator" once a month will help maintain your train's smoke unit.

There's still no smell like finding an old train that hasn't been ran in years, opening the box, and  applying the first electrical current back to it, usually while it just sits there, making that WONDERFUL buzzing sound!!!Then you can start to smell those Old,hard as rock smoke pellet residue!!!!Add a LITTLE smoke fluid, to break it all up, AHHHHHH!!!!!,now that's livin'.

Last night I set up a small loop of fast track out in the garage to get the smell out of the house. Wow does that garage stink! lol. We left for the day and the smell followed us in the van for a while, and as soon as we returned, the smell was still waiting for us in the garage. I think I will do another over night soak with the eliminator and run it in the garage again in the morning. I can't wait to get that PE back under the tree and have that gingerbread smell filling the living room.

I also tried both the gingerbread and eliminator in another engine, and they both worked and smelled great. Thank you mega steam for great products. 

I haven't had a problem like I hear. If the problem is that bad why not take the shell off the loco take the wadding or wick out clean with alcohol and reinstall. I think this would be a faster solution.

Coltm16a2556:  Sounds like you have done all that can be done with trying to get rid of the nasty smell. You have gone extra miles in your attempt. "Eliminator" should have worked by now.  Rarely, but sometimes, the wicking material is scorched or burned and that smell is what you are experiencing (that may have happened when it was primed and tested overseas?) and if that is the case, there is nothing else to do but change out the wicking material.  There are several experts on this forum that can do it for you or advise you further.

IF THE OP did not put in enough drops of smoke fluid at the beginning , he/she  may have burnt the wicking at the start !   causing that bad smell. 

I put in twenty drops before I start up a new MTH or lionel engine ! EDIT ad on : LOOKs like Megasteam beat me to the punch line. 

If the wick did get burnt that smell will never go away until you change the wick out and clean the smoke unit out. A charred wick will affect the proformance of the smoke unit as the wick will not be able to fully absorb the smoke fluid.  I'll take a little "Eliminator" on a ear swab and clean the smoke unit with that then put in a new braided wick from MTH and prime the wick with fluid before putting the cover to the smoke unit back on. 

I'm with KennyB, But I want smoke with that Three-in-0ne oil/ozone/ lead icicles on the track smell. Oh, the memories!    

Well it seems to have gotten a little better after a fifth and sixth round of eliminator. It still stinks, but its not obnoxious to the point of giving us a head ache like it was. I bought this set new a couple months back, but just recently got it out for under the tree. It was never ran without fluid. I have to call Lionel tomorrow anyways for a faulty power pack. (its a lionchief PE) I might see what they suggest about the smoke unit. Maybe they will fix it? If not I will look further into deep cleaning or replacing the material inside. It seems like a nice set and the kids love the polar express movie, but its a little disappointing to have a nasty burning smell and a power pack that failed within an hour. (luckily i have an extra). I appreciate all the replies and suggestions.
