I have a couple of questions about some of the Geep rebuilds NS has done it the past few years and need some questions answered by those "In the know". I know that the 5800 series GP38-3 are being built from former Southern GP50. As I understand it, they received a new cab and short hood. My question is, has the cab been moved forward closer to the pilot necessitating a shorter than normal low hood? Reason I ask is I noticed they are rebuilding some of their GP59 locos which already had a low short hood but they seem to have added some body length behind the cab mean the cab has been moved forward creating a very stubby short hood.

The GP59E rebuilds appear to be getting admiral cabs, whereas the GP38-3s got the standard stock EMD style cabs.  There may be some new rules regarding crashworthiness on certain classifications of rebuilds, but I'm not sure.

Here's a picture I found of fresh GP59E rebuild 4650 with the admiral cab:

Here's a good comparison of a standard EMD-style GP40-2 with new RP-4EC slug with Admiral cab:

Altoonaworks.info has all the info you'd want as reference.

The Admiral cab like pictured above, has a more squared off nose with larger rest room facilities.

The rebuilt SD's  being rebuilt such as the 6900's, have a redesigned shorter walk way on both front and back, and a totally different "wide body" design like I've never seen.

The older Southern 3200's that are being rebuilt have a new cab that looks like an older short hood 6100 SD cab,but with central HVAC and a larger restroom .

I'll try to get some pics. on in the next day or so of the interiors of each.
