Odd ball CNR Switch engine seen on "Trains and Locomotives". I'd take one in S gauge!

Mark, yes, they are nice looking engines.  I also watched the program on RFD today, and found it all interesting.  The GMD-1 units rate at 1200 hp and, as you stated, are used on the smaller "local" lines with the lighter 60 pound rail.  Looking at them on the program, they reminded me of the Geneset locos, although they are much older and not near the same in motive power, just similar in looks.  All-in-all, the entire program covering long freight consists, the long grain hopper trains, and various motive power, with GATX and SOO Line engines included with CN and CP motive power.  Always a great show to catch when I can, but I believe they took off the Thursday showings of model railroading in "I Love Toy Trains".

I think it's a postal service designation for Rural Free Delivery. It started in the late 19th Century to deliver mail to the farm community. When I was a kid and living on the farm, our address was RR2 (Rural Route). I can't offer any suggestions as to why the television series is called RFD.

Mark,  Might there be someone you know who owns one of these in HO? It might be a possibility to have a shell made with a 3D printer, of course you would need to build or modify a chassis to fit. It depends on how much you want it, I agree it is a neat looking locomotive.

Some of them were used in Passenger service between Toronto & North bay and occasionally we'd get one in way freight service.   Seems some had 4 wheel trucks and others 6 wheels track. I can't remember much about them except the one we had wouldn't  make transition... The fix.... The Engineman grabbed the pipe wrench and gave the electrical cabin it a good whack as hard as he could... It worked...Hoggers  had all kind of tricks for fixing electrical problems back them....    Poking wooden flag stick in all sorts of places in the electrical cabinet. Kind of scary. 

They were found in pairs a lot. Here's a couple in the '80s with the BB trucks and the spark arrestor exhausts. Video for you too.

I worked the ground off one of those back in the early(?) 1990's on the D&R.  I think it was a four axle.  Didn't particularly care for it. Favorite D&R engine was the SW1. Liked the big porches of the SW1, and the box on the cab end was great place to sit back and eat lunch.
