The turtle refers to Mackinac Island, which was said to mean the great turtle - foundation of the world....Although I suppose that some disrespectful people said it referred to the speed of the D&M's trains.  

 

BTW, Mackinac is pronounced MackiNAW, the C on the end is silent.

Specifically, the word "mackinac" is derived from the Ojibwa Indian word michilimackinac meaning "island of the great turtle." Pretty neat to have the turtles on the cars. I wonder when they stopped using that.

 

I've read that the only American railroad to have an animal in its logo was the Great Northern. Kind of hard to believe, but true. Of course, Canadian Pacific had the beaver. 

 

I first visited the island in 1957 on a family trip, and about 15 years ago did the trip with my own family, so the name sparks some personal memories for me. The bridge was still under construction back in '57, so we'd taken a ferry across the straits.
