I also posted this in the 3-rail/027 side. Not to long ago one of our forum members painted his Heavyweights in the Polar Express paint theme. I'd like to know what colors he used. Any help and/or directions would be appreciated. I hope to create my own Std Gauge Polar Express for the Christmas tree. Hopefully, I'll be able to post photos of the finished project.

Sorry I missed the post.  Thanks for the compliment, Chris.

Pappy,

I replied to your email, but I'll post here as well, in case others want the info.

I took a scale Lionel Polar Express Heavyweight and highly modified the back end, to look more like the car in the movie.  Basically, I made a whole new rear end.

What I did was color matched the blue paint to what Lionel put on the cars.  I did not do the maroon(?) stripe.
Here is the formula that I came up with for a match to the Polar Express blue:
Floquil RR Enamels
*4 parts Reefer Gray
*1 part CSX Blue (GLOSS)
*slowly add Reefer White-not quite 1 part

I sprayed the color over Floquil Primer(gray).  Then I clear coated with 50/50 mix of Floquil Crystal Cote and Flat...this gave an identical appearance in paint.

Lionel did not wrap the stripe around the rear of the obs car, so I didn’t either.
I have not tried to color match the maroon stripe.  I did however find a similar color to Lionel’s PE stripe.  I repainted a few cars to go with Lionel’s Polar RR scheme which is similar colors to Polar Express.  I took a operating barrel car, painted it gold and added Polar Express cocoa labels to the barrels.  I also painted a RailKing log dump car in a maroon paint.  This paint was found at Wal-Mart in a rattle can.  When I get a chance, I’ll send you the name on the can.  While it is not an exact match, I think it would look great with the blue.  The color is a few shades off from Lionel’s maroon.  I have attached a photo that shows my painted log car with a Polar Express heavyweight.  If I were going to paint a whole set of cars, I would use this for the stripes.

The only thing is, I go not know if it is compatible with Floquil Enamels.  Some forum members have mentioned about certain paints incompatibilities.

There was a forum member, who’s name escape me, that bought his own heavyweights and painted them in Polar Express colors.  They looked good.  I don’t think he posts anymore.

I hope this helps and I can’t wait to see your cars.  Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
I’ll send you the name of the maroon paint.

Here is a photo of the maroon I used on the log car...

OK...I found the can of paint that I used on the above log dump car.

It is:

Krylon Fusion 2425 Satin Burgundy.

As I mentioned, it wouldn't work as an exact match, if you were modifying an already painted car.  It would look great for custom painting a set of cars.

Another thing I found...

I don't know if you have any ideas for the Polar Express font for the cars.  I recently ordered some Dry Transfer letters from Woodland Scenics and took note of some yellow and gold fonts that would look good.  Lionel used a yellow font on the heavyweights I have.
