The bearings on a 1947 726 that I recently got are shot. 6 of the 8 are worn badly. Looks like gobs of ear wax everywhere around the axles. Old dried out lionel grease is my guess. It didn't do much to lubricate that's for sure.

I removed the wheels and old bearings successfully. I can press in new bearings myself but don't have the proper press/cups to press the wheels back on.  Is this engine pretty much a lost cause or is it salvageable? The loco is in good shape other wise and complete. Is there anybody recommended to do this work?

Thanks

Put the wheels on one end of the axles. Install those in the frame and install the side rod. Install a wheel on the other side getting the quartering as close as possible. Then use the other side rod to get the proper orination correct. Getting the side rods to fit is more important than quartering. Use something parallel like a vise, drill press, or lathe to press the wheels back on. If the wheels do not press on thight there are Locktite products that will fix that.
