I have the same problem 

If you Bought used or sometimes new from MTH .

The minute the engine is aguired from the Full DCS system , the The Dcs commander will not run your engine .  You have to FACTORY RESET using the FULL DCS system .  

three of my new engines were factory tested , I can not use them on the Dcs commander .

I thought I would try and see if I could program/ reset the engine using the DCS Commander (I have the modest base unit). I tried to add the engine in the DCS mode and got Er/Error message.

Fortunately, I'm in Baltimore Maryland not far from MTH so a certified MTH Tech comes by every Tuesday to work on MTH products  but I'd like to see if it  any can be remedied before I shell out any more moola.

Try a DCS-RC reset.  This one was made in 2014 and may have the capability of being factory reset using the DCS-RC.

Turn off power if on
Wait 15 seconds
Turn on power:  the engine should be dark and quiet
Press no other buttons
Press SND
Press DIR
Press "-"  (on the gray rocker in the center of the remote.  Also is the speed down button.)
The engine will give a two honk response and will be sitting on the track running
The engine has now been factory reset, and is ready to run with your DCS Remote Commander system.
