Quaker Steak Dinner

Usually, people start arriving at about 5-5:30.

Yeah, about that time. Seems that the night usually ends a little earlier than past years, which is understandable.

Just to clarify for those who might try to search for the restaurant, the name is Quaker STEAK, not state.  Might be a good idea to change the title of the thread.

We all got older in those intervening years.

Yeah, I remember in 2018 we all stayed pretty late. I heard the NJ HiRailers were there until closing if I recall.

last year was our first time at york, father and son,  me, gary and my son, ryan. A great experience, especially meeting the people and seeing items we have not seen elsewhere. We made our hotel reservations late, about 5 weeks before and could only find the york hilton at $210 per night, 2 nights, about $420 + total. after our many train show purchases, we bought pizza for dinner not quaker steak. would have been really special to join you all there. Perhaps for this upcoming october show, someone could recommender places to stay a bit more reasonable. or, is $420 close to the norm for 2 nights. We drive in from NJ

Call the Hampton Inn on Queen St in York itself or the one in Shrewsbury (about 12 miles south of York on 83). They usually go for $150/night.

I booked in June the Homewood Suites, a little north of Route 30 along 83......$160/night.

At this late date, I see 4 options.  1) look for places a little farther away, 2) search for small motels and B&Bs that might be under the radar (Smith Motel west of York used to be popular with meet goers, but I have no experience with it), 3) wait until the last minute and hope that a vacancy pops up, or 4) bite the bullet with the rooms you have.

Whatever you do, don't book a chain that charges less than about $125 per night - there's a reason for the price.  For example, the Super 8 has rooms available for $100 per night; I've stayed there in the past but will never go back.

There are always threads in the York meet forum discussing accommodations.

I use the booking site Hotels.com and just a quick check shows a few good options under $180 still available.  With sites like this, you can filter and sort by rating, distance, amenities, etc. to find what best suits you.  If you don't want to book through the site, you can still try and book through the hotel, but keep in mind that available rooms may be held for booking sites.  I wouldn't wait too long to book, though.

The real difference is that at previous OGR gatherings, T. G. I. Friday’s was open until 11pm/ midnight. Quaker Steak closes at 9pm. They were turning off the lights on us back in April!

Oh man really? I don't think that was closing time before 2020 though. I do recall 2018 we were there at least until 10:30-11, think the HiRailers at least 1. Not sure about 2019 but think at least 10-10:30.

I'm sure that they would like to stay open later, after all, sale of all the adult beverages we tend to enjoy is where the profit is in most restaurants of this type.  A lot of restaurants are still facing staffing shortages, but I've noticed the closing times creeping back up at a lot of places local to me, so hopefully this will be the case at the York QS&L, too -- a quick check of their web site states a 10pm closing on Thursdays.  I am already thinking about the wings I will be getting there, covered in my favorite sauce "Thai-R-Cracker".

As Andy noted above, their website states that they close at 10 pm on Thursdays, not 9. Not a whole lot of difference for those who enjoy being with friends until midnight or beyond, of course, but at least it's enough time for one more round.

Andy, you would think they would.  But the teenage waitstaff's agenda was to get the heck out of there as soon as they could.  By 8:30 there were just a few of us still there in April, the closing time didn't seem to matter.  But I did get another beer out of Erol!

Good evening gents.....you think maybe a few adult beverages will dull the Achilles pain? If so I'm in!!  Who am I kidding...I'm in anyway!!

Relaxing a bit before heading out to Quaker Steak tonight. I think I will pop out around 6.

I am amazed that place is still opened. The NJ ones closed!

The town(north) up from me(the big town as it were) where all the restaurants are has flipped a bunch of places. Fridays was there until they had a second fire, Applebees went out I don't know when(they always had good business), the place that came into Friday's didn't last(Crab Shack or something like that), Boston Market is now something else too, forget the name. You go south of me and all the diners are still the same name.
