Question about Plastruct girders and beams for a skyscraper under construction

You're right, the catalog is daunting to say the least.

H beams are usually for the vertical, and I's are for the horizontal. When you pick the correct sizes, the I's can fit right into the H's. If you can get to a hobby store that has the Plaststruct rack, you can try them out and gather the numbers. Depending on how tall you plan to go this could get spendy.

Typically h beams are used for vertical columns and I beams are used for horizontal members. An h 8 beam in plastruct is 1/4" x 1/4" or 12 inches in scale.

Have you considered using some of the old Kenner Girder-and-Panel sets?   Not exactly scale but probably pretty economical.

think about concrete beams and columns made from Styrofoam or wood no connections needed

Call me in the shop in the morning. I will walk you through it. We also keep a general inventory of the various shape here at the shop so I can measure the various pieces as we talk. Lastly, we have a dealer account with EMA/Plastruct......

Pallalin . . . . I have considered the Kenner set and it appeared a bit too toylike for what I am attempting to do.

AlanRail . . . . concrete columns are an excellent idea. I just had it in my head that several stories of I/H beams would be very attractive visually and help with the scene I have in mind.

Ooops, I forgot to say that I ordered the new Menards tower under construction as the basis for the scene. It may turn out to be too toylike also, but I am going to give it a try. I think by dressing it up with a more realistic surrounding, it might work.

Attached is a plan I have used to build a structure. It would be interesting to compare with Alan's.
