Last fall at York I spoke with a Lionel representative and suggested that they offer their Pac Car 57 foot reefer in the Santa Fe MTC paint scheme.  I flipped through the new catalog and low and behold, there on page 75 is the 57 foot mechanical reefer in Santa Fe!

However, the catalog illustration shows item 6-17764 numbered SFRC 56244 as orange with a black roof, black door and black lettering.

My research shows that 400 cars, SFRC 55400-55699 and SFRC 57000-57099 were built by Pacific Car and Foundry and are most similar to the Lionel model.  Other mechanical refrigerator cars were built by the Santa Fe shops and had angled posts on either side of the doors.  Roofs of SFRC mechanical reefers appear to be either orange or silver with navy blue doors and lettering .

Here is a photo of a Pacific Car and Foundry built reefer.  Note that all the outside posts are vertical.

I believe this is an ATSF Topeka shop built car with slanted post either side of the door.

Here are my questions for Santa Fe Fans.

1.  Is the Lionel number, SFRC 56244, a correct number for a Santa Fe reefer with all vertical posts?

2.  What  is the correct roof color for a Santa Fe MTC reefer with all vertical posts?

3.  What is the correct color for the door and lettering on a Santa Fe MTC reefer?

I have several other versions of this very well executed model by Lionel.  I would like to have it in the Santa Fe MTC scheme and would like to see as faithful model as possible.  I would be happy to write Lionel or talk to them in person at York and want to make sure I have accurate feedback to give them.  Any information from our Santa Fe experts would be greatly appreciated.

The number Lionel used is for a Santa Fe Rr-95 class reefer.  #s 55900-56299.  They did not have the vertical post.

Paint - 1963 - 1973 for these classes SFRC RR-77, -83, -86, -87, -89, -90, -92, -94, -95, -96 and SFRP RR-88

Sides - Refrigerator Orange

Lower Side Trim - Refrigerator Orange

Doors - Baltic Blue

Ends - Refrigerator Orange

Underframe - Black

Trucks - Black

Roof - Unpainted

That is comes from:

Santa Fe Railway Rolling Stock Reference Series - Volume Six

"Mechanical Refrigerator Cars  and Insulated Refrigerator Cars of the Santa FE Railway 1949 - 1988", by John B. Moore, Jr.

It is hard to believe that the color of the lettering is not easily found, but from the many pictures, it appears that the lettering is Baltic Blue.  It could be black, but the angle of the lighting from the sun disguises the true color.

If I can find my painting guide, I'll see if I can clarify that.

I still recommend you try the Yahoo ATSF group.

And the lettering was black

Thanks for clearing that up Alan.  I was surprised the lettering color wasn't stated in what I was reading, as was the rest of the info.  I had to go by pictures and the lettering in some looked blue (perhaps I was influenced by the door) and others looked black.  In the pictures of newly painted cars it was shiny and seemed blue to me.  In the more weathered cars, it looked black.  I thought possibly the black was due to age/weathering.

Again, thanks for correcting me and clearing it up.
