So I decided these parts deserved their own car to travel in. A gondola would serve this purpose well. The project would test something I've been wanteing to try. Namely I wanted to paint the car in Tru-Color paint. I wanted to try Tichy Decals and the new Scale City Design stirrups.
The source car is an old Pola Max gondola that I was keeping for just such a project. The first thing was to remove the cast on stirrups and grab irons as they would be replaced. I also decided to shave off the cast on side and end ladders. These would be replaced with some Intermountain Boxcar ladders that were in my parts box...
I kept the original trucks but removed the giant couplers. I replaced them with some dummy couplers (kiel line or Scale craft?).
I then added the Scale City stirrups, new grabs and ladders...
Now off to the Paint booth. I used Tru-color Freight car red. Sprayed it on with no problems. Works similarly to Scalecoat paint, but without the extended drying time. After a quick spray of Gloss cote. I applied Tichy group's NYC gonola decals. These layed down very well and responded well to Solvaset except for the black NYC logo decal. I had to "glue" it down with Future Acrylic floor polish...
Now for a little weathering. I wanted it to show a well used but not decrepid condition car. After sealing the decals with a flat finish. i lightly sprayed a dliuted black acrylic wash over the car body. I then added some rust to the seams and side stakes. Another spray of a dirt acrylic wash and finally a grimy black to complete the weathering...
Now add the Corsair parts load...
together with its companion car, completes the project...
