I have no layout, so I do count it as modeling a Railroad. I am a west coast guy so UP,SP, AT&SF, and I collect only one East coast Railroad and that is the RF&P, these are all Locos or certain Passenger cars. I also collect any Railways or Railroads in San Diego County, so the SD&IV counts with my genset pulling modern freight like the real one does in the early morning. I will run freight cars from all parts of the USA and parts of Canada.I have snow clearing equipment Jordan Spreader,Rotary Snow Plow and my little short Alaska winter "Relief" delivery train. What Railroad do you collect primarily and/or do you model any era or Railroad line?

Also have no layout -- at least for now. Here's what I collect:

  • Santa Fe. First train ride and the Harbor Subdivision tracks ran past my first serious job
  • Chicago & Norhwestern (strange since the first and only time I've set food in CNW territory was a stop at O'Hare Airport on the way to York in April.
  • Some Southern Pacific. Tracks ran near the house I grew up in.
  • Some Union Pacific. The number increased substantially due to the acquisition of the Heritage Units.

Here's one for you to research. I truly wish that I could copy the current M&ET (Modesto & Empire Traction). Their new Gensets are beautiful in their new paint scheme. Followed by at least six of M&ET's 50' boxcars.

 

If I couldn't have the first, I'll gladly accept a substitute. Make it two of M&ET's first diesel locomotives. They were GM 70 ton 600 hp units. They carried numbers 600 & 601 in the original yellow and red paint.

I don't collect anything by Railroad. The collectors I know usually collect things based on other criteria. For example, someone might collect cabooses, or flatcars. Collecting 6464 boxcars is popular. I know a fellow who collects Lionel's non-train production items. I think someone participating here collects GG-1's. There are lots of ways to set boundaries on a collection.

 

I have purchased items because I liked the paint scheme, and I am partial to NYC and Pennsylvania Rail Road.

The nearest main line railroad to my home (but not the closest railroad!) is the old B&O Metropolitan Sub, now CSX. I've grown up visiting the B&O Museum and seeing equipment from the B&O and other associated railroads. The B&O's old Georgetown Branch used to run (now a trail) practically right through my backyard and their are still many remnants left around from it and it terminates practically across the street from my employer in Georgetown. 

 

Obviously, B&O, C&O, CSX, Chessie, etc. Also have some Pennsy and N&W. I try to stick to local - B&O, C&O, Chessie, CSX, etc. Obviously that has changed a bit. 

 

I also spend much of my summers and vacation time on Eastern Long Island in the Hamptons. One piece of LIRR rolling stock has now grown into several as well as one steam engine and an on-order MTH LIRR 44 ton switcher. 

There are a lot of neat trains out there, but I have decided to focus on the Reading and the B&O.  I use to also model the Pennsy, but because of resources, decided to focus on the other two lines.

 

As a kid in the early 70s, I lived very close to a Reading line and saw Reading trains almost daily.  I also use to run my mini-bike near the Reading tracks. 

 

Fast forward to more modern times, I have lived near B&O tracks for the last 22 years. 

 

Thus, I currently model the Reading and the B&O.

Canadian Pacific, preferably pre Multimark but I do have CP1800 in Multimark as well as Beaver Crest. Steam!!!! And the CP E8A 1800 series! Really looking forward to the 3rd Rail E8s to be done next year!

Some CN too although only one CN steamer so far. There will be others to keep it company!

 

While I grew up with Lionel stuff, I have no desire for the NYC and Ill. Central stuff I had as a boy in the 50s. I lust after some of the beautiful US "Big Steam" locos but have resisted them so far.

Right now I am working on setting up a layout. My favorite railroad is Reading Company, the passenger side of the Reading Railroad, also collect reading Lines which is the freight side of the Reading RR. Trying to find some Philadelphia & Reading RR items on O gauge. The P & R was the parent company of the Reading RR in 1800's and early 1900's.

I also have a few Amtrak pieces in my collection.

   In reality I am a Tin Plate Train runner, and have a smattering of RR names in Pre War, Modern & Post War trains, especially the PRR GG-1 era.  I also have post War and Legacy GP7/GP9 Northern Pacific Trains, that I really like.  All the trains run at Christmas time on a Multi-Level Christmas Layout.  The large Game Room/Office multi level layout has been dismantled due to space concerns, in our home.  Would love to purchase another home with enough space to accommodate my train layouts and have them up all the time.

when I was in ho trains it was up and santa fe with some ns.Now thanks to a book.I came across called yonder comes the train.It had a map of a railroad called seaboard air line.Looking at the map I saw it went into nc.To a town called monroe nc were it splits in two.One going on to sc the other going to charoltte nc.Had some pictures of their locomotives.Came across their mike q3 class.But I was suprised to see their r1 class 2-6-6-4 type.But I like their mountain class m class.Now that I am in o gauge I have 4 mth mohawks/mountain to us southerners.All can pull a far sized freight trains.I just need to get me some decals for sal steam locomotives.Which not really a problem any more.But I also have locomotives from up,sf,sp,mil,csx,ns,conrail,erie,nkp and c&o.
