We were in the city this past weekend and wanted to spend time checking out at least a portion of Manhattan’s current railroad scene. For our first stop, we paid a visit to Gotham Model Trains. It is a modest store located on the 13th Floor of 224 West 35th Street. In stock were books and a smattering of equipment and supplies in all scales, three rail O gauge included. I picked up a few pieces for my N scale roster. I’ve intended to stop to see this store for some time and I’m glad I finally did so. The staff was very friendly and helpful and I’ll be back at some point. Our itinerary also took us to FAO Schwarz later in the day. The Lionel display layout was operational and looked very nice. Three trains – an 0-8-0 powered freight, the NJ Transit U34CH set and the Polar Express were running. During the time we standing by the railroad I heard comments such as “We should get our trains out” or “We have that set” so there are some encouraging signs among the general populace. Several different Lionel O gauge sets, a “Little Lionel”  set and an LGB starter set were available for sale. Of course, our day started and ended with the obligatory trip on the North Jersey Coast Line. It’s just not a trip into the city unless you take the train!

The start of the holiday season is literally just weeks away and I hope this report serves as something of a preview for folks looking forward to partaking of the city’s many train related attractions at this time of year.
