Real train track question ..

I was watching some old Maine Central videos.....And saw a single track going over a stream ....and inside the single track ,there was another section ...diamond like...And this section ,started before the stream crossing and ended just past the bridge....Just wondering what purpose it served ..thanks

Those are guard rails, intended to keep the trucks going in a straight line if they derail on the bridge.
