Making the Layout with what is locally available is a prime requirement.
Here in NH, It would be MTH RealTrax as it's readily available at the only O Gauge LHS in decent driving range. He also stocks some Fastrack but the price difference is significant. I must concede the Fastrack switches are better. Some (random) Realtrax switches have a couple issues that once addressed are fine.
The Difference between MTH Starter Sets and Lionel Starter Sets is large.
MTH sets come with command control & Full sound systems for the same money as most conventional Lionel sets with only a whistle & maybe a bell.
MTH sets can be run with the Full Command system, the Lionel sets can not do command control, you must replace the engine.
Both are available here at the LHS.
IF your LHS stocks both, I would put both RealTrax and Fastrack on the layout. If Tubular is readily available I would also have a length of that on it.
The handout listing differences in track types & Makers and where to find all of them is critical.
