Like everyone else it gets crazy around the Holidays. I was hoping to find the new Lionel Crayola Crayon Hopper at my dealer before Christmas. It was announced some time ago. You know how smells can evoke memories? I think that is part of the attraction as well as the great graphics. I was really looking forward to this car.

Sure enough it comes on the 26th.  I head to Grandpas Trains,  put it in the car and race off to my next appt / task.

There appears to be a large amount of cardboard that gets generated around the Holidays. One of my duties as master of the house in my mind is to go to the "transfer station" and throw out the trash and recycling.

You know that feeling something is wrong?  Yup - brand spanking new in the shipping box Crayola Hopper was grabbed with the rest of the cardboard in my back seat and was tossed into the recycling dumpster. I didn't realize it till the next morning when I thought " let's go check out the new Car".

It's not the $, it was the dashing of having this car and the embarrassment of admitting to my wife the "real men of genius" move I just pulled.

MJ looked at me and just shook her head. We had a good laugh. My plan now was to call Grandpas the next day and order another.  Next day - Grandpa has no more.

I'm busy and don't have time to search. Two days later my wife smiles at me and says "guess what's coming in two days"? Yes indeed - she reached out to our friend Steve Serenska who suggested another dealer and sure enough - Paul has his Crayola Hopper.

Don't you just love a happy ending. My wife - she's the greatest.

Paul

As I've crested 50 I do more and more crazy, forgetful things especially when rushing. So glad you had a happy ending. Your wife is very sweet!

Aaaaah…. a kindred spirit!

This is one of those Funny/Not Funny moments my wife and I always seem to find ourselves in.

Definitely glad it was rolling stock and not an engine!!

I would have come out on the local news!! Crazed man looking for toy train in dumpsters has been captured and sent for mental evaluation.

LMAO!!

Your wife is a fantastic person BTW!! I can only hope mine would do the same for me brother.

I purchased change gears for my atlas 618 lathe a few months ago. I remember putting them back in the box and putting the box someplace safe until I went to my shop. Where ever that are they are very safe. I can’t for the life of my find them. However in the process of looking I did find several other things that I have misplaced.

they will show up one day, I just hope I remember what they are when they do.

Hey Paul:

Jeez, the one time you wanted one of those recycling Nazi's to call you out and tell you you were putting the wrong item in the wrong bin, none of them were on duty.   ("Excuse me, sir?  No!  That bin is for cardboard only, not cardboard and plastic and sintered steel!")

I'm glad everything turned out well and that you got a nice surprise ... twice.

Steven J. Serenska

And you're not even old. I do have that excuse for my stoopid moments. My last (RR) one cost me $400+, so don't be hard on yourself.

Normally I don't go for such as the Crayola car, but that thing just graphically works, and I do get the Crayon smell thing - they smelled just the same in 1954.
