I was fixing some problems with my friend’s Lionel Rio Grande SD-50, 6-18221 the other day. After all broken wires were mended, I gave it a test run and found that all Conventional functions worked as expected and that all TMCC functions worked, save just one. When I put it in the PROGRAM mode and turned track power on, I got diesel sounds, not silence as I expected – rpm sounds varied with voltage – not sure about motion, bell or horn, frankly I was focused on why any sound was present at all. I did reprogram the engine ID successfully, but I was trying to change the ID from 12 to 55, and when I finished punching in the 55, the engine went through the shutdown sounds … but it was indeed reprogrammed to 55 when I restarted it in RUN mode.

Any thoughts on what’s going on?

George
