I would like kids to be able to switch lights on and off on our layout. There may someday be operating accessories that would require a momentary pushbutton switch. The places where I will mount the switches will be either 3/4" thick 1x4s or 1 1/2" thick 2x4s.

What do you suggest? I imagine some rocker switches and some pushbuttons. Open to other recommendations, though.

Cheaper is better, within reason; will likely order from digikey. Safety is good, too. I prefer rocker switches to toggle switches because I can easily envision my kids (and, perhaps more likely, me) hitting their heads or eyeballs on the switches, harming the switch or person.

Jonathan

Jonathan,

I used these illuminated switches to control the interior and accessory lights on my layout.

Here's the ordering information:

Mouser Electronics
www.mouser.com
1-800-346-6873

Stock # 112-R13-112AH-W4
Shin Chin Part # R13-112AH-W4-02-UB D
Body of switch: Blue
Button: Black
Illumination color: Blue
Rating: 10A/250VAC

Note: The switch is 20.2 mm in diameter, roughly 3/4". There is a keyway on one side to keep the switch from rotating when in use after mounting on the control panel.

They do not come with any wiring instructions (surprise, surprise!). I can send you a copy of my hand-drawn version if you need it.
