Hello,

I picked up a new, unused Coors Silver Bullet train set a couple years ago and want to run it on my layout. I read somewhere that I can blow the PS2 board if the speaker is frozen. I have a few question:

  1. I have removed the body from the engine, but can't figure out how to get to the speaker. Can someone tell me what I need to do next? It doesn't look like I can access the speaker from the bottom.
  2. Can someone point me to the OGR article that talks about testing the speaker on old engines?
  3. Is that anything else I need to check before putting power to the engine?

Thanks for the help,

Cyril

EDIT You may have to remove the PS2 board set? Sorry, it's been a while since I had one of these open.

These 2 circles holes are recessed screws for the weight, unsure if that is required to lift out the PS2 board?

The frame is this huge diecast piece and the speaker sits in the very bottom pocket. There is no way to reach the speaker from the bottom side externally.

Take some pictures, get out your screw bin for sorting all the parts.

Thanks Vernon. Sounds like it may be more than I'm willing to tackle. Do you think it's a must do before I put power to the engine since it's 15 years old and never been run? Do you know if the odds of the speaker issue are low enough to risk blowing the board? A new board is $200, so I'm trying to figure out if I should send it off to a repair person or take the chance and put it on the track.

Thanks, Cyril

Self inflicted.  First, battery was strong, no need to replace.  Speaker did have some deterioration of the magnet.  This is the 45mm 4 ohm speaker.  The boards were blown, both processor and power supply.  Damaged the battery charging circuit at processor level, so it could not be repaired to full use.

So scratching my head on what caused it.  Looking closely at ALL wiring because I have been bitten by this before I notices the fan motor wires were tight, and under the motor mount.  When I removed motor the gray 5V wire had been crushed with exposed wire strands shorted to chassis.  Hence the damage.

Owner had inadvertently removed motor screw and during reassembly the wires went under motor mount.  G

Those pesky DCS boards, they don't like any grounded leads!

What did you use George, the PS32 board?  I am curious if the Coors chain files work properly with the PS32 board...

I know they work, I used them to make a Premier Northern with a PS3 Steam upgrade kit (AKA PS32 board) into a Coors consist. Sorry, not trying to take away from this repair thread, just saying that yes, I know first hand there is a repair since this was a unique engine and by using the specific Coors chain files on a PS32 board and loading the matching sound file with Coors soft button function, it works and will activate the cars during the PFA.
